Level 3 Basic
140 questions • 4 hours70 materials and processes; 10 certification-standard topics; 15 each from four selected NDT methods.
Technical leadership, advanced ultrasonic theory, procedure writing, code reasoning and scenario-based examination. Built around the CGSB/NRCan EMC exam scheme, with separate study and mock modes.
70 materials and processes; 10 certification-standard topics; 15 each from four selected NDT methods.
Wave physics, beams, signal processing, instrumentation, calibration and evaluation.
10 codes questions and 30 UT applications/technique questions. Bogsworth scores raw question accuracy for practice.
Prepare a UT technique for a specific test article: equipment, standards, calibration, coverage, evaluation, records and approvals.
Critique a deliberately flawed UT procedure, identify technical errors and check against an audit key.
1. Benchmark your UT General knowledge. 2. Study weak theory topics and calculations. 3. Complete one full Basic or EMC mock. 4. Write a procedure using the supplied scenario. 5. Audit a deliberately deficient procedure. 6. Repeat your weak topics.
Unofficial training tool, not an NRCan examination or authorized procedure. Existing Bogsworth legacy questions are included for volume; their answer keys have not all been independently revalidated. Newly written questions are labelled separately. Always consult the currently invoked code edition and the latest certification-body guidance.
Questions are shuffled; no repeated questions within a session. Explanation shown after each answer in study mode.
Theory across UT physics, instrumentation and evaluation.
Practice simulation, not a prediction of official results. Per-part Basic scoring is shown separately. Codes/application mock scores questions equally; this does not replicate the official exam's weighted marks.
Randomized, worked examples using explicit units and assumptions. Formulas appear after you answer.
Wavelength, sound path, skip, near field, pulse-echo depth, attenuation, dB, reflection and refraction.
Build an original procedure, section by section. The checklist is a study scaffold, not an approved field document.
0 / 14 sectionsAssume you're the approving Level III. Read the fictitious draft below and mark suspected deficiencies. Multiple issues are intentionally embedded. This training exercise is not the NRCan examination document.
1. Scope: All steel, aluminum and nickel-alloy welds, 3–150 mm thick, including any product configuration.
2. References: Current code. Acceptance to be determined by technician from a reference echo.
3. Personnel: Any employee trained on the machine may examine and approve results.
4. Equipment: Any ultrasonic instrument and any 70° probe. No frequency or element size requirements.
5. Calibration: Set the 100 mm range using a 25 mm aluminum plate before testing 80 mm carbon-steel welds; verify sensitivity once per year.
6. Examination: Scan one side only, from 0–30 mm from the weld centreline, regardless of weld dimensions or beam angle. Assume the weld root is completely inspected.
7. Temperature: Standard water couplant is suitable for all surfaces including 250 °C components.
8. Evaluation: Reject every flaw above 80% screen height regardless of code, flaw type, location or size.
9. Reporting: Mark PASS or FAIL; component ID, datum, defect position, calibration and settings are optional. Retention: until the end of the shift.
λ = v / fv in mm/µs; f in MHz → λ in mm.d = v × Δt / 2Round-trip travel time; subtract probe/wedge delay.d = S cos θSingle leg; S sound path, θ from surface normal.x = S sin θIn a single leg; equivalent x=d tan θ.N ≈ D² / (4λ)Unfocused circular piston; ideal assumptions.ΔdB = 20 log₁₀(A₂/A₁)Approx. +6 dB doubles voltage amplitude.sin θ₁ / v₁ = sin θ₂ / v₂Use correct incident and transmitted modes.Z = ρ vNormal-incidence reflection depends on impedances.Elastic-wave theory, near/far field, attenuation, impedance, wave conversion, instrument characteristics. Complete two General mocks.
Manufacturing discontinuities, scan-plan design, calibration, evaluations and critical angle selection. Complete Basic Part A/C drills.
Review the invoked code hierarchy, write a complete procedure, and critique the flawed example. Complete an EMC mock.
Time the 140-question Basic, 30-question General and 40-question EMC practice. Revisit the lowest-performing topics and rewrite the procedure from memory.
